Why is checking gauge so important for garments?

Unlike blankets or scarves where a slightly different size doesn’t matter, gauge is absolutely critical for clothing because it dictates the final fit of your garment.
Even a tiny variation of just one extra stitch per inch over the width of a jumper panel can cause the final piece to turn out several inches too small or too large!
Checking your gauge before diving into your project ensures:
  • The perfect fit: Your garment will measure exactly what the sizing chart promises.
  • Accurate yarn quantity: If your stitches are too loose, you will use more yarn than specified and risk running out before your garment is finished.
  • The correct drape: Matching the gauge ensures the fabric stretches, hangs, and moves exactly the way the design intended.
Always take the time to crochet a 4" x 4" (10cm x 10cm) gauge swatch using the pattern's specified stitch pattern, and adjust your hook size up or down if your stitch count doesn't match ours!
