Yarn Substitutions
You do not have to use the exact brand of yarn listed in our samples. However, to ensure your clothing fits perfectly and hangs beautifully, you should match the Yarn Weight and consider how your chosen fiber behaves.
  • Match the Weight Category: If a pattern calls for DK yarn, you must substitute it with another DK yarn. Using a different weight will completely alter the size of your garment.
  • Select Your Fibre Profile: Designs are written to be flexible across different fibre types, so you can adapt it to what you have access to:
    • Acrylic: Budget-friendly, widely available, durable, and easy-care. Produces a consistent fabric and is ideal for everyday items and gifts.
    • Cotton: Slightly heavier with good stitch definition and breathability. Can create a firmer drape depending on spin.
    • Wool / wool blends: More elastic with excellent warmth and drape, but may behave differently in tension and blocking.
    • Recycled fibres: A good option when available, offering similar properties to their virgin counterparts with reduced resource use.
Because different fibres behave differently, a small swatch is recommended if you are substituting yarns, especially if drape or sizing is important.
Ultimately, while these are my designs, this is entirely your creation. Most importantly, have fun with the process—the whole joy of making is experimenting with different yarns and colours to create a piece that is completely unique to you. Never worry about making mistakes along the way; ripping back a few rows is just a natural part of the creative process and how we learn. Happy crocheting!
